On November 17, 1804, Kharkiv Imperial University was established by Alexander I. The Faculty of Morality and Politics is also one of the colleges of the university. In 1835 the department was renamed the University Law School. In 1920 the Ukrainian government decided to establish the Institute of National Economy on the basis of the Law Faculty of Kharkiv University. The Faculty of Law is the basis of the Institute of Law, which trains lawyers for state and economic institutions. In 1930, the National Economic Research Institute was renamed the Soviet Institute of Construction and Law and received the status of a higher legal institution of higher education. In May 1933 the Institute was renamed the Institute of Construction and Law of the Ukrainian Communist Soviets. In order to improve the training of lawyers, it was relocated in 1937 at the Kharkov Legal Institute. In the pre-war period, eminent jurists, experienced scientists and teachers were among the professors and teaching staff of the Institute. Some of this comes from legal practice work at the Supreme Court, the Attorney's Office, and other law enforcement agencies, and has contributed greatly to the development of the Institute's latter. On March 20, 1991, by resolution of Ukrainian Minister Rada, the Kharkov Law School was reorganized in the National Law School of Ukraine. On March 30, 1995 the Academy received the status of higher education institution of the National Autonomous (Autonomous) Oblast, and on November 4, 1995 it was renamed the Ukrainian State Law Academy of Yaroslav the Wise. On May 21, 2001, it was recognized by the state for its important role in the training of specialists in state agencies, law enforcement agencies, areas of legal practice, various institutions taking into account the need to maintain and further develop the University's Faculty of Science. On December 4, 2013 the school was renamed Yaroslav the Wise State Law Academy of Kharkov.
Today, the college has a strong faculty team with more than 800 teachers, including more than 100 professors of law doctorate, more than 600 associate professors of science, 1 Ukrainian hero, 1 academician of Ukrainian National Academy of Sciences, 17 Ukrainian national Members of the Faculty of Law, 22 corresponding members of the Ukrainian National Academy of Law, 18 respected scientific and technological workers, 2 respected Ukrainian art workers, 1 respected worker of a higher school, 15 Ukrainian public educators, 15 Ukrainian Lawyer, 1 honored Russian lawyer, 1 honored Ukrainian builder, 7 honored professors, 2 honored Ukrainian cultural workers, 3 honored Ukrainian artists, 14 winners of state awards. Currently the university has 23,000 students studying at the university.
The institution has made significant contributions to the formation of national laws, the updating of law-making and the process of enforcement. Students are directly involved in the creation of the effective Constitution and other regulations of Ukraine. Cooperation of the University with the Secretariat of the President of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, ministers and ministries, local government bodies is maintained in the law-making process. Students at the institution actively influence the practice of legislation. Most of the many alumni who graduated from the institution serve as advisors, members of the advisory boards of the Supreme Court, the High Economic Court, the Office of the Prosecutor General, the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Central Election Commission of Ukraine and others.
The institution is a leader in legal education. This is confirmed by the rating results of the Ukrainian higher education institution "Compass", which is the leader in legal education institutions in Ukraine, taking into account the ratings of partner legal institutions and graduates. The University received the Gold Medal at the 13th International Exhibition of Educational Institutions. The institution won the first prize in «Ukrainian Educational Innovation» and was awarded the diploma "Innovation in Higher Education". The institution received the award "Leader of Ukrainian Higher Education" at the International Exhibition "Modern Educational Institutions" in 2012.
The institution is active in international activities, and the university has signed cooperation agreements with educational institutions in the United Kingdom, Vietnam, Spain, Germany, Poland, Russia, the United States, Uzbekistan, France and other countries, among others. The school is a participant in the European joint project of the «Tempus-Tasis» project network and many other international projects. The university is a member of the Association of European Universities.
For foreign students, the university has established a Faculty of International Law. The faculty of the Faculty of International Law teach in English. Foreign students need to provide a certificate of English proficiency when applying to the university.
It is an educational cooperation institution established between universities in the People's Republic of China and universities in Ukraine. The alliance aims to promote educational exchanges, cooperation and development between the two countries.
