In 1949, when the Chinese People's Liberation Army was on its way to liberate Xinjiang, Wang Zhen, the commander of the First Corps, instructed the establishment of the Health School of the First Corps of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (developed into Shihezi Medical College in 1978), which became the predecessor of Shihezi University.
